Climate Change

Doomsday Clock

Doomsday Clock

I read an article in my local newspaper about the movement of the hands of the Doomsday clock. The creation of the doomsday clock occurred following World War II by scientists concerned about the use of nuclear weapons which were moving the world closer to catastrophe. The latest movement places the minute hand 2 ½ minutes from midnight. This is as close to midnight as the clock been since 1953 when the US and USSR tested nuclear devices.

Climate Change Connection

The possible impact of climate change, while not as explosive as nuclear holocaust, could prove to be equally catastrophic to life on earth.

The article took feedback from many of the scientists based out on Livermore Lab who are responsible for design and maintenance of the nation’s weapon arsenal.

The question was asked about how the proximity of the doomsday clock to midnight related to global catastrophe resulting from climate change.  A range of feedback received ranged from the clock should be heeded all the way to the idea of a clock ticking to global catastrophe as being ridiculous.

My take

Regardless of your viewpoint clearly moving the hand closer to midnight is a response to the recent statements from President Trump whose views threaten to hinder the progress made by the Obama administration to combat climate change. Considering Mr. Trump’s view that Climate Change is hoax the data presented by many of the world’s most eminent scientists speaks for itself.

The Doomsday clock is ticking. The problems are 1) Globally we are not sure when the minute hand will strike twelve and 2) what happens at twelve which is a lot clearer in the nuclear war scenario.   My bet is when midnight arrives the result will be much more innocuous than Cinderella’s beautiful gown turning to rags.   Hopefully, as a planet will not need make that wager.
